Stone Setting

This course is an excellent additional course to our Jewellery and Goldsmith Skills Courses. These setting courses teach you the skills to manipulate the precious metal around gemstones so that they are safely and securely held (set) in your piece. These courses are also very popular amongst the Jewellery trade with apprentices attending regularly. We also often welcome trade goldsmiths who are interested in improving and practicing skills in a structured environment.

Tutored by Lee Harding, these Stone Setting Weekend courses will take place regularly throughout the year.

Students can choose any ONE kind of setting to learn how to complete over the course of the weekend.  Please choose which type of setting you would like to learn on the weekend course when booking.

Rubover: This is the technique when the metal is pushed all around the girdle of the gemstone. This is ideally the first introductory course to Setting, some previous experience using the pendant drill is required to enroll on this course.

Punch (Invisible): This course will teach the student how to drop the stones beneath the surface of the precious metal so that the setting appears to be invisible. This is a natural progression from the Rubover Setting Course , however it is possible to do this course without having done the previous course.

Pavé setting: This course will teach the student how to raise grains of metal around the stones so that the stones are held securely. This is a natural progression from the Rubover and Punch Setting Course. Previous setting  experience, or completion of the Rubover setting course is necessary.

Channel Setting: Students will be shown through demonstration and practice the correct techniques to use channels of precious metal to hold stones into a setting. This is a natural progression from the Rubover, Punch and Pave Setting Courses. Previous setting experience, or completion of the Rubover setting course is necessary.

There will be extensive practice on the weekend that will include practical excercises using base metal and will result in a finished piece that is made in Sterling Silver using cubic zirconia. Lunch and the materials to practice and complete a finished piece for the one type of setting you choose will be provided.

Students must be at least 16 years of age in order to enrol in any course at The School of Jewellery Ireland.
